Mindfulness Course ‘Be Calm, Be Happy’

Thich Nhat Hanh Mindfulness MeditationThis relaxed, uplifting group mindfulness course is the first in the UK to be approved by the monastics at Plum Village, who study in the mindfulness tradition of Zen Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh. It is suitable for those of all faiths or none, and will run every Wednesday morning for 6 weeks from 1st Nov 2017 to 6th Dec 2017.

You will learn mindful meditations including walking, sitting, eating, movement and relaxation. Each week covers a different subject such as stopping & calming, turning to the positive, loving communication, nourishing happiness, interdependence & community, and pathways to a happier life.

COURSE OVERVIEW
Be Calm, Be Happy provides a gradual introduction to mindfulness, meditation and key teachings on positive happy living over 6 weekly classes. Each class includes guided mindfulness exercises and meditations, group discussions and practical exercises led by experienced facilitators in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

WHO COULD ATTEND?
Be Calm, Be Happy courses are suitable for beginners, as well as those wishing to refresh their mindfulness practice. It is suitable for those of all faiths and none. Our course participants come from a wide range of backgrounds, but all are keen to learn new ways to look after their own well-being and to develop positive responses to the challenging situations that life inevitably brings to each of us.

PROPOSED COMMITMENT
Community of Interbeing logoFor this course to be effective, we recommended that you commit to attending all 6 sessions and also to 20 minutes daily practice for 5 days each week. Creating a stable and strong practice of mindfulness is a habit that needs regular, ideally daily, practice. If you know ahead of time that you can not make a session then please discuss with your Course Leader so that you can understand the content of the missed session. If you have to miss a session at short notice please arrive early for the next session so that you can speak to the Course Leader ahead of time. We will do all that we can to support you to get the most from this wonderful course!

COURSE SCHEDULE & COST
This course is taught over 6 weeks, every Wednesday morning from 1st Nov to 6th Dec 2017. Each class is 2 hours long and the class timings are 10:30 – 12:45, including a 15 minute tea break half way through. The course costs £95 in total, with concessions £60.

I began practising mindfulness in 2000. This was a year in which my life had been turned upside down by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, leading to early retirement from university teaching. Learning the practice of mindfulness during this period not only supported me through the difficulties, but began to transform my life in a positive way. In 2008 I trained to teach mindfulness in a Tibetan tradition. Seven years ago, inspired by the gentle, joyful wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh, I began to practice with the Community of Interbeing and in 2016 I received the 14 Mindfulness Trainings, and was given the Dharma Name ‘True Deep Teachings’

Be Calm Be Happy StockportI have been practising mindfulness for over 16 years. Originally teaching nutrition, my cancer experience in 2015 highlighted, even more clearly than before, my appreciation of the joyful simplicity of Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings. Since being cured, I focus primarily on reaching out to inspire others to practice mindfulness in their daily lives. I offer free online tools to support a mindful, happy life at my ‘Soul Nutrition’ website (www.soulnutrition.org), which I developed for my MA in Education. I received the 5 Mindfulness Trainings in 2016 and was given the Dharma name ‘Dharma Light of The Heart’.
